Understanding redirects

What’s the difference between 301 redirects, live redirects, and redirect rules?301 redirects are permanent, server-side redirects for broken pages (404 errors). They preserve SEO rankings and redirect instantly. Use these for specific URL changes where the original page no longer exists.Live redirects are JavaScript-based redirects for active pages that are still live on your store. They don’t provide SEO benefits but let you redirect visitors between active pages. Use these when a page must remain active but you want to send visitors elsewhere.Redirect rules use patterns to automatically redirect multiple 404 URLs at once (e.g., all /collections/* URLs). Use these for bulk redirects or when broken URLs follow a pattern.
301 redirects and redirect rules only work on broken pages (404 errors) and help preserve your SEO. Live redirects work on active pages but don’t provide SEO benefits. Choose the right type based on whether the page is active or broken.

Tracked visits include:
  • 404 page visits: When someone hits a broken link on your store
  • Redirect rule activations: When a visitor triggers a redirect rule
  • Live redirect visits: When a visitor is redirected from an active page by a live redirect
Tracked visits do not include:
  • 301 redirect visits: These are unlimited on all plans.
Think of tracked visits as the “active work” Redirect Pro does each month to catch problems and apply dynamic redirects.
Rule matches show you the actual URLs visitors accessed that triggered your redirect rules. You can review these matches and convert high-traffic patterns into permanent 301 redirects for better SEO performance and faster redirects.This is valuable for migrations, replatforming, or when you want to optimize which redirect method handles your traffic.
